Imagine yourself being beamed up into a U.F.O., rays of energy and light slowly carrying you into the unknown. The earth below sinks farther and farther away, until you’re flying through space and time, witnessing galactic wonders occupying realities you’d never even dreamed of. The cosmic transcendence of Radar Gold’s “Fortune Teller” would be a fitting soundtrack for the journey.

At times it’s a rocking experience, with blistering drums propping up layers of synths and guitars, led by excellently processed vocals that use an octave effect and delightful harmonies to punch through the celestial symphony behind them. “Space Boss” runs rampant, “Astral Flight” blends a pulsating groove with frenetic energy that constantly threatens to break through into your stream of consciousness, and “Robogorgon” is a delightful sci fi romp that is constantly egged on by furious guitar riffs.

“I have grown…I have stretched my soul”

At times it’s a more thoughtful and immersive exploration of space and time, as “The Veil” and “Seven Eight Nine” encourage us to break through into the light. “Iron Hands” is a particularly great track, where Radar Gold’s signature layered vocals and sudden chaotic mood changes culminate into a piece that showcases the group at the height of their celestial powers.

At the end of this journey, a line from the opening track “Seasons” still sticks with me. “I have grown…I have stretched my soul” and indeed I feel as though this album has stretched my soul, and I have grown from the experience. My hope is that you will also listen to “Fortune Teller”, and find that a journey with Radar Gold will stretch your soul into the cosmos as well.
