Write for the paper.
The register is listings. A review is the other thing: a signed piece on a local record or a night in town, printed under your own byline.
Reviews are the only prose on the register. Every piece carries its writer's byline and gets a page of its own, and the head of it prints on the band or the show it is about, so a reader who came for the date finds the writing.
There is no score and no star rating. The piece is the verdict. Nothing in this section is written by a machine, and nothing here ever will be.
- A release. A record by a band on the register: an album, an EP, a single, a tape.
- A show. A night at a room on the register, written by somebody who stood in it.
Both hang on something already on file, which is how the piece links back to the band or the bill it covers.
Which record, or which night, and when you can have it in. That is the whole pitch. Nobody here has an English degree and none is wanted.
Say what you heard. A few hundred words is plenty, and the desk sets the type.
